The High Performance Leadership Program (HPL) is a program you need to complete in order to earn your Advanced Leader- Silver award. This is a proven three-part learning process of study, action, and feedback.
When you taken on the HPL program, you work with two teams of people: the project team and the guidance committee.

[edit] The Project Team

There are no rules for what kind of project you undertake for this program. It can be something you do for Toastmasters, work, or another organization you participate in. Here are a few ideas for Toastmasters projects:

  • Kick Off Party
  • Speech Contest
  • Anniversary Party
  • TLI
  • District Conference
  • Club Presidency
  • Area Governorship
  • District Governorship

Whatever project you select, there must be two or more people for you to lead in the project. None of these people needs to be a Toastmaster, but none can be on your guidance committee.

[edit] Guidance Committee

The guidance committee is a group of people who are in place to help you learn more about leadership. They are to guide you through your project offering advice and helping you learn more about leadership skills. The people on your guidance committee are determined by you. There are a few requirements:

  • You can have as many people as you want on your guidance committee
  • You must have at least one Toastmaster in good standing on your guidance committee
  • No one person can be on both the guidance committee and project team

The guidance committee works with you from the HPL workbooks. These can be purchased from Toastmasters International for about $12. The packet comes with one book for the participant and three books for guidance committee members. If you need more than three, extras can be purchased for another $1 each (these are in US prices). It may be wise for a participant to have their own copy of the guidance committee book to know what they will read. The books do not need to be turned in or returned to the participant. The committee will meet with the participant 5 times.

[edit] The Program Details

The High Performance Leadership manual walks you through the project’s different phases, providing study material and activities to complete. There are five phases (each matches the meetings with the guidance committee).

  1. The need for leadership. The world needs strong, competent leaders now more than ever before. The six dimensions of service leadership: Vision and Values; Direction; Persuasion; Support; Development; Appreciation. Assessing your current leadership skills and how to become a more effective leader.
  2. Selecting your project. Developing a vision and a mission with values.
  3. Building a team and creating an action plan.
  4. Helping the team accomplish its mission and how to deal with setbacks.
  5. Analyzing efforts and managing time well.

[edit] Servant Leadership

What is Servant Leadership?

  • "The servant-leader is servant first. Becoming a servant-leader begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. The best test is this: "Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants?" -- Robert K. Greenleaf from "The Servant as Leader"
  • If you work for your people (Toastmaster Member), then what is the purpose of being a manager (leader, Club Officer, Division/Area Governor)? To help them accomplish their goals.
"Your job is to help them win." -- Ken Blanchard from "Servant-Leadership Revisited"
